Abstract

This paper discusses the information already published in the literature about the ecological changes caused by the bull-frog linking these alterations to its introduction, as well as the contextualization of its introduction in Brazilian territory. During the last century the bull-frog (Lithobates catesbeianus) was indiscriminately introduced in several countries in order to be grown on a commercial level because of high demand for their meat and by-products such as leather. In Brazil, the proposals of promising economic success established by the practice of frog culture have stimulated its introduction in various regions. Considering its great invasive potential and its easy adaptation to new habitats, this specie has increased its distribution and become a concern with regard to the preservation of biodiversity. Its general eating habits, voracious and predatory behavior and considerable size interferes in communities where its interspecifics interactions were not historically found. Such interference can lead to profound ecological impacts such as the decline and extinction of native species through competitive exclusion, predation, transmission of pathogenic and even hybridization with other species. Although currently the bull-frog regards as one of the 100 worst invasive species in the world and its alarming current distribution considering its risk to biodiversity, Brazil still does not have effective legal measures to contain and to manage this specie and ecological researches are extremely rare. Thus, partnerships between environmental agencies and the scientific institutions are needed to promote its eradication of natural environments.

ER -
