Trata-se de um estudo ecológico realizado a partir de dados dos 1.159 municípios que compunham a região sul do Brasil no ano 2000. As variáveis independentes foram o Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano Municipal (IDHM), a taxa de analfabetismo, o coeficiente de Gini, a proporção de pobres e de p</span><span style="font-size: 8pt; color: black; font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: PT-BR; mso-fareast-language: PT-BR; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;">essoas em domicílios com água encanada e banheiro, a média anual de consultas médicas em especialidades básicas, a média mensal de visitas domiciliares por família e o número de consultórios médicos por 10.000hab. </span><span style="font-size: 8pt; font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: PT; mso-fareast-language: PT-BR; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;" lang="PT">Foram utilizados os testes de<span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> Kolmogorov-Smirnov</span>, ANOVA e Kruskall-Wallis e calculado o coeficiente de correlação de Spearman. Foi identificada associação estatisticamente significante entre a mortalidade infantil e todos os indicadores socioeconômicos. Quanto à proporção de baixo peso ao nascer foi identificada associação com</span><span style="font-size: 8pt; color: black; font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: PT-BR; mso-fareast-language: PT-BR; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;"> a proporção de pessoas em domicílios com água encanada e banheiro, média anual de consultas médicas em especialidade básicas, coeficiente de Gini, proporção de pobres e média mensal de visitas domiciliares por família.</span><span style="font-size: 8pt; font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: PT; mso-fareast-language: PT-BR; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;" lang="PT"> A distribuição espacial dos agravos investigados permitiu a identificação de regiões com piores indicadores investigados e que </span><span style="font-size: 8pt; color: black; font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: PT-BR; mso-fareast-language: PT-BR; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;">necessitam de maior investimento e atenção governamental. As políticas públicas na área de saúde infantil devem considerar a necessidade de melhoria das condições socioeconômicas e de acesso aos serviços de saúde a fim de reduzir as desigualdades em saúde e a magnitude dos agravos.</span></div><br /><br /><div><strong>SPACIAL DISTRIBUTION AND ASSOCIATION BETWEEN INFANT MORTALITY AND LOW BIRTH WEIGHT WITH SOCIOECONOMIC FACTORS AND HEALTH SERVICES IN THE SOUTHERN REGION OF BRAZIL.</strong></div><br /><br /><div>Abstract <br /><span style="font-size: 8pt; font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: PT-BR; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;" lang="EN-US">This research aimed to realize the spacial distribution of the infant mortality rates and of the proportion of low weight newborns in the southern area of Brazil and to test the association of those indicators with socioeconomic factors and health services.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>It is an ecological study put together from data collected from the 1,159 municipalities comprising the southern area of Brazil in the year 2000.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>The independent variables were the Municipal Human Development Rate, the illiteracy rate, the Gini coefficient, the proportion of poor people and people in homes with indoor plumbing and bathrooms, the annual average of medical visits for basic medical specialties, the monthly average of home visits per family and the number of medical clinics per 10,000 inhabitants. Kolmogorov-Smirnov, ANOVA and Kruskall-Wallis tests were performed and the Spearman coefficient of correlation was calculated.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>A significant statistical association was established between infant mortality and all the socioeconomic indicators.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>As for the proportion of low birth weight, it was associated with the proportion of people in homes with indoor plumbing and bathrooms, the annual average of medical visits for basic medical specialties, the Gini coefficient, poverty levels and monthly average of home visits per family.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>The spacial distribution of the diseases investigated allowed the identification of areas with the worst indicators investigated and which need greater government investment and attention.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>The public policies in infant health care should consider the need to improve the socioeconomic conditions and accessible health services in order to reduce the inequalities in health and the magnitude of the disease.</span></div> ER -
