ABSTRACT

Hepatitis B is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). About 350 million people worldwide are infected by the HBV. Many of the individuals infected are not aware of being chronic carriers and transmit the disease sexually. Many individuals are not aware of being infected by the HBV until blood donation and examination, when testing methods detect the presence of the virus. HBVpositive individuals are at high risk of developing liver cirrhosis or cancer, leading to organ failure and need for transplantation. In the present work we analised the positivity of one hepatitis B serological marker in 113 patients notified in the Secretary of Health of Campo Mourão, State of Paraná, in the year of 2006. Our study corroborated data from other authors: we observed that incidence of infection was greater in women (57.5%) and that positivity for the virus was higher among individuals 21-40 years of age. None of the HBV-infected individuals analyzed in this study were between 0-10 years old, which means that massive vaccination resulted in effective immunization in the youngest population. The present work may contribute to politics of public health, helping orientations programs and prevention concerning hepatitis B incidence in the Midwest region of Paraná and another areas presenting high prevalence of HBV.
ER -
