VISCERAL LEISHMANIASIS IN THE STATE OF MINAS GERAIS: PANORAMA, CHALLENGES AND PERSPECTIVES

Leishmaniasis are diseases caused by intracellular protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania. In the most severe form of disease, named visceral leishmaniasis, the parasites invade cells of mononuclear phagocyte lineage located mainly in the liver, spleen and bone marrow of their vertebrate hosts. In Brazil this disease caused by L. (L.) chagasi induces typical pathological alterations in humans and causes significant morbidity and mortality. Thus, it has been considered an important public health problem. This study shows the descriptive aspects of the disease in the State of Minas Gerais and the factors involved in transmission, treatment and control of visceral leishmaniasis. In addition, it discusses about the processes of expansion of the disease due to the urbanization and it demonstrates some strategies that may be used to control the disease in Brazil and in Minas Gerais. Other important aspect discussed includes the development of an effective vaccine against the disease. Thus, in this context, the support and promotion of new researches play an important role in eradication of the disease.
}, number={1}, journal={SaBios-Revista de Saúde e Biologia}, author={Malafaia, Guilherme}, year={2009}, month={jul.} }
