RIPARIAN FORESTS: IMPORTANCE AND MAIN THREATS

There are controversies about the term riparian forests. Many authors also consider the expression riparian environment. Despite the diversity of names they represent, in general, the vegetation surrounding streams, rivers, lakes and water bodies. These forests play important ecological roles as a habitat that provides food for aquatic and terrestrial fauna. Currently, the expansion of agricultural frontiers, fires, urbanization and introduction of exotic species restrict these habitats by reducing the connectivity between forest fragments. These changes in the natural dynamic of these places lead to species extinction or, to the restriction of their areas of life.

}, number={1}, journal={SaBios-Revista de Saúde e Biologia}, author={Vogel, Huilquer Francisco and Zawadzki, Cláudio Henrique and Metri, Rafael}, year={2009}, month={jul.} }
