FAMILY-WORK CONFLICT AND THE PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT BETWEEN WOMEN

ABSTRACT

The rise of women in the labor market has conducted society to a new family arrangement, in which there is the entrance of another source of household income and greater possibility for female satisfaction with the acquisition of more prominent social roles. However, in attempting to balance the various functions, women might face conflicts between work and family and family and work. This quantitative and descriptive research, through a survey and use of validated scales, sought to evaluate the relationship between the level of work-family and family-work conflicts and work engagement among married women or women with children. This study also aims to investigate whether the support and help in housekeeping influence on levels of the conflict. The results indicated eight groups of women with different levels of work-family and family-work conflicts, being the largest group composed of women with low level of conflicts, followed by the group of women with low level of family-work conflict and moderate level of work-family conflict. In addition, we also found a negative relationship between the work-family conflict and strength at work, as well as a negative relationship between the family-work conflicts in the absorption of the employee. Finally, family support reduces levels of conflict, while the workload boosts them. The results point out a need for organizations to invest in strategies that would minimize conflicts, such as flexible working hours and childcare support resources.
ER -
