GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS AND TOURISM: Possibilities in Brazil’s Context

ABSTRACT

Geographical Indications (GIs) are institutes of intellectual property for goods and services that characterized by the place from which they are originated, involving particular environmental, historical and socio-cultural characteristics. Under Brazilian regulation, GIs can be of two types: indications of source (IP) or designations of origin (DO). Several studies attribute functions and/or different impacts resulting from the use of these distinctive signs. One of which is tourism development with increased demand and improved products added to the offer. To understand the scale and potential existing in Brazil, it is necessary to describe reality in relation to goods and services registered in the country. Therefore, the general objective of the study was to describe the current situation of Brazilian GIs as potential to be exploited by tourism. The essay was constructed based on bibliographic and documentary research (including research articles from the CAPES database; legal documents – laws and agreements -; the Brazilian registered GI database from INPI; and other references). Counted up the record of 42 geographical indications, 34 IPs and 8 DOs, with emphasis on those characterized as food or crafts. The findings underline potential intersections between geographical indications and tourism during the different moments from touristic consumption (before, during and after visit).
}, number={3}, journal={Perspectivas Contemporâneas}, author={Medeiros, Mirna de Lima and Passador, João Luiz}, year={2015}, month={dez.}, pages={56–79} }
