Abstract
This review aimed to describe some relevant characteristics of the cashew nut shell liquid and the possible effects as an additive in nutrition of ruminants. Plant extracts, mainly functional oils, are considered alternative additives that can improve microbial modulation, the ruminal fermentation characteristics and digestibility in ruminants. The liquid extracted from the cashew nutshell (CNSL) is functional oil characterized for being a natural source of unsaturated long-chain phenolic compounds. By their chemical characteristics, the CNSL may influence the diet digestibility and induce changes on the end products of ruminal fermentation. Although some of the effects of CNSL have already been demonstrated, the available studies on the oil are still limited, so future research in vivo and in vitro to examine the benefits of CNSL in the nutrition of ruminants are required.
Key Words: Anacardic acid; Cardanol; Cardol; Ruminal fermentation; Nutrition.
}, number={1}, journal={Revista Campo Digital}, author={García Díaz, Tatiana and Teodoro, Ana Lucia and Osmari, Milene Puntel and Salab, Beryk Lopriato and Matos, Laiz Fiorilli de and Giotto, Francine Mezzomo}, year={2015}, month={ago.} }
